Somatic Therapy & Mind-Body Healing

When words aren’t enough, the body can become part of the healing process.

  • Trauma, chronic stress, reproductive experiences, grief, and chronic illness can affect more than our thoughts and emotions. These experiences may also influence how we breathe, move, experience physical sensations, respond to stress, and feel within our own bodies.

At Grace Hope Counseling of Florida, somatic therapy integrates traditional psychotherapy with body-based and experiential interventions designed to support greater awareness, nervous system regulation, emotional processing, and reconnection with the body.

Somatic interventions are thoughtfully incorporated into treatment based on your individual needs, preferences, physical abilities, and therapeutic goals. You are always invited to choose your level of participation.

Somatic Interventions

Depending on your treatment goals, sessions may incorporate:

  • Trauma-Informed Yoga & Therapeutic Movement
Gentle, adaptable movement practices that support body awareness, grounding, emotional regulation, and reconnection with the body.
  • Breathwork & Mindful Breathing
Intentional breathing practices that encourage present-moment awareness, grounding, and regulation.
  • Mindfulness & Meditation
Practices that cultivate awareness of thoughts, emotions, sensations, and internal experiences without judgment.
  • Yoga Nidra & Guided Relaxation
Restorative mind-body practices that encourage deep relaxation, internal awareness, and opportunities for nervous system settling.
  • Trauma-Informed Boxing
Structured boxing-based interventions—including stance, footwork, hand wrapping, and work with mitts or a heavy bag—that may be therapeutically used to explore grounding, boundaries, agency, emotional expression, confidence, and embodied strength.
  • Trauma-Informed Strength & Resistance-Based Movement
When clinically appropriate, strength-based movement may be incorporated to support experiences of agency, physical presence, boundaries, and reconnection with the body.
  • Somatic Grounding & Body Awareness
Practices focused on noticing physical sensations, orienting to the present environment, identifying internal cues, and developing greater awareness of the connection between body and emotion.
  • Mindful Walking & Movement-Based Psychotherapy
For appropriate clients, therapy may incorporate intentional walking or movement while processing thoughts, emotions, experiences, and therapeutic goals.

Who May Benefit?

Somatic therapy may be helpful for adults navigating:

  • Complex trauma or PTSD
  • Reproductive or birth trauma
  • Infertility and reproductive health experiences
  • Pregnancy, postpartum, or reproductive transitions
  • Pregnancy or infant loss and grief
  • Chronic illness, pain, or changes in physical functioning
  • Anxiety, chronic stress, or difficulty regulating emotions
  • Disconnection from or discomfort within the body
  • Life experiences that feel difficult to process through conversation alone

A Trauma-Responsive Approach

Somatic therapy at Grace Hope Counseling of Florida is not about forcing the body to revisit traumatic experiences or pushing through discomfort.

Our approach emphasizes choice, collaboration, pacing, consent, and bodily autonomy. You remain in control of your participation, and interventions can be adapted or discontinued at any time.

Somatic practices are integrated within the therapeutic relationship and selected according to your treatment needs—not prescribed as a one-size-fits-all approach.

Faith and spirituality may also be incorporated when desired through practices such as contemplative prayer, Christian meditation, breath prayer, or spiritually meaningful reflection.

Extended Integrative Therapy

Somatic interventions can be incorporated into traditional psychotherapy sessions; however, clients who would benefit from additional time for experiential work may choose an Extended Integrative Therapy Session.

These 85-minute sessions provide additional space for psychotherapy combined with somatic, mindfulness-based, movement, or other experiential interventions without rushing the process of grounding, exploration, integration, and closure.

Healing can involve more than understanding your story. It can also involve changing how you experience safety, strength, connection, and possibility within your body.
